Sagamore Hill Presents: Great Backyard Bird Count - February 13, 2016

For Immediate Release: February 4, 2016              Contact: Shaileen McKenna 516-922-4788

Oyster Bay, NY: Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, the home of Theodore Roosevelt in Oyster Bay, Long Island, will be hosting the Great Backyard Bird Count event on Saturday, February 13, 2016 from 9:30 am – 11:30 am at the Old Orchard Museum. Here’s your chance to grab those binoculars and get involved as a citizen scientist!
Thousands of people worldwide contribute to scientific research about bird populations and critical issues affecting birds. We’ll begin the program indoors with basic bird identification techniques, using binoculars and field guides, and learn a few common birds in our area.  We’ll then head to the nature trail (weather permitting) for a chance to see and hear birds in their natural habitats. Our data will be entered into the GBBC website, and you’ll learn how you can submit your own bird observations at home.
This program is free of charge and suitable for all audiences. The program is both indoors and outdoors, so please dress accordingly. Some trails are not paved, so good walking shoes are advised. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them.
Visitors will still need tickets to tour the president’s home. Tickets are available the same day as the tour at the Visitor Center. Tours are conducted every hour on the hour from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Tours are limited to 14 people, and on weekends often sell out between 10:00am – 12:00pm. It is recommended that visitors arrive at 9:00am to purchase tickets.

Ask at the Visitor Center about other activities available including visiting the Theodore Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard, touring the grounds, and hiking the Nature Trail. There are also free Junior Ranger activities for children.

Sagamore Hill buildings are currently closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and will remain closed on these days until Memorial Day onMonday, May 30, 2016. At this point buildings will be open 7 days a week until Labor Day on Monday, September 5, 2016. Grounds are open 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset.
