We are so pleased to welcome Skyline Farm Carriage Museum
as a participant in the 2018 Teddy Roosevelt Days event. Skyline will have two exhibit pieces on display during the event. Both items represent connections to the Narcissus.

1) The John Libby Family Sleigh. John Libby was an early settler (the 1630s) in the Black Point area of Scarborough, Maine. W. S. Libbey, the builder of the Portland-Lewiston Interurban, is a descendant of John Libby (as is this blogger :) This sleigh is described as an "Early Painted Sleigh" The original artwork on the back exterior panel is exquisite.

2) A wagon from the late 1800s. Theodore Roosevelt visited Maine several times before his New England tour as President in 1902. His early visits to Maine included using horse-drawn transportation of the day. A passenger in a Stagecoach from Dexter to Greenville in 1872. Several trips in a wagon while visiting Island Falls in the company of Maine's William Sewall and William's nephew, Wilmot Dow during guided expeditions in the Maine woods in the summers of 1878 and 1879. Also, as a passenger in sleighs during his February 1879 visit to Island Falls. He escorted his fiance' in a pony-drawn buggy while they were visiting Mount Desert Island in 1880. As President, he was a rider in an open landau carriage pulled by horses in Portland during his August 1902 visit. You will learn more of these details over the weekend :)

The original Sewall Homestead was where Theodore Roosevelt
stayed during his three trips to Island Falls, Maine
in 1878 and 1879. PWM

One of the presenters on the schedule for the Friday gala opening is Ms. Donna Davidge. Donna is a direct descendant of William Sewall of Island Falls, ME. William (Bill) Sewall and his nephew, Wilmot Dow were Theodore Roosevelt's guides during TR's three visits to Island Falls (1878 and two in 1879). TR stayed at Sewall House during those visits. Donna owns the Sewall House in Island Falls, thus keeping the home in the family with many of the original furnishings, etc. still within the home since those early days when TR stayed there. Bill Sewall and TR would remain close friends for their entire lives. Donna will discuss the history of the Sewall House and will have a few TR/Sewall-related artifacts to share with the guests who attend the gala opening on Friday.

More details will follow...

Mark your calendars, purchase your Friday-opening tickets in advance, and make plans to attend the 2018 Teddy Roosevelt Days  Event on July 20, 21, & 22 at Seashore Trolley Museum.
