Seashore Trolley Museum will open its 2018  public operation season on Saturday, May 5. The public operations will be weekends-only through Memorial Day weekend, then daily through Columbus Day, and weekends only through the end of October. 2018 will be the 79th anniversary year recognizing the arrival of the very first vehicle in the collection, 1900 open-car No. 31 from the Biddeford & Saco Railroad.

The exhibit in the Morrison Hill Station is coming together. It may not be fully in place by opening day for public operations, but we are close. In part, the new exhibit/display will prompt/encourage Museum visitors to travel along the path to the Donald G. Curry Restoration Shop. There they will find many additional exhibit panels that were installed last week along the wall of the visitor gallery walkway.

With the new roof on the Donald G. Curry Town House Restoration Shop and the addition of new LED lighting in the shop, these new panels will be well received by visitors to the shop. Other improvements are taking place on the other side of the wall seen here. More on that in a future post.

at
Seashore Trolley Museum
Kennebunkport, Maine
July 20, 21, & 22
A Benefit Event For the Narcissus Project

Plans are coming together for the 4th Annual TeddyRoosevelt Days Event at Seashore

The schedule is coming together. As in previous years, the fundraising event to benefit the Narcissus Project will kick off with a Friday activity that requires tickets to be purchased in advance for the limited-seating gala opening. The Friday activity will include a reception, trolley rides, a guided tour of the Narcissus, presentations, raffles, a silent auction, and Theodore Roosevelt-related items for sale. All proceeds benefit the restoration and companion interpretation programs (Exhibits & Education Program Development) of the 1912 Portland-Lewiston Interurban, No. 14, Narcissus. Saturday and Sunday activities are open to the public with the purchase of general fund admission tickets to the Museum. More details on the event will follow in the coming weeks. Tickets for the Friday gala opening will become available online in May.
Tickets are $30 each.

One of the presenters on the schedule for the Friday gala opening is Ms. Donna Davidge. Donna is a direct descendant of William Sewall of Island Falls, ME. William (Bill) Sewall and his nephew, Wilmot Dow were Theodore Roosevelt's guides during TR's three visits to Island Falls (1878 and two in 1879). TR stayed at Sewall House during those visits. Donna owns the Sewall House in Island Falls, thus keeping the home in the family with many of the original furnishings, etc. still within the home since those early days when TR stayed there. Bill Sewall and TR would remain close friends for their entire lives. Donna will discuss the history of the Sewall House and will have a few TR/Sewall-related artifacts to share with the guests who attend the gala opening on Friday.

More details will follow...

Mark your calendars, purchase your Friday-opening tickets in advance, and make plans to attend the 2018 Teddy Roosevelt Days  Event on July 20, 21, & 22 at Seashore Trolley Museum.

This post is a companion to the slide presentation program done by Phil Morse as a guest speaker for the Falmouth Memorial Library and Falmouth300 (the presentation includes Donald Curry presenting on the restoration of the Narcissus currently underway at Seashore Trolley Museum) and was made at the West Falmouth Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. The images and text are from various sources, including some that belong to Phil Morse. Other sources will be noted. Much of the text and many of the images were drawn from various books released by O. R. Cummings. O. R. wrote more than fifty books on electric railway systems throughout New England. O. R. passed away early in 2013. He was a member/volunteer at the New England Electric Railway Historical Society (Seashore Trolley Museum) starting in 1947, serving as its historian for many, many years. O. R. was a personal friend and is dearly missed.

This material is not intended as a comprehensive history of the Portland-Lewiston Interurban or the railway systems that served the greater Falmouth area. Instead, it was tailored for the Falmouth audience attending the public presentation at the West Falmouth Baptist Church on April 17, 2018. Its intent was to show a glimpse of how the Portland-Lewiston Interurban and its employees were important to the communities they served in the early 1900s and to let them know that one of these majestic PLI interurbans, the Narcissus, was saved and is currently being restored at Seashore Trolley Museum.

The Portland-Lewiston Interurban 1910-1933

The Portland-Lewiston Interurban (PLI) operated in West Falmouth from 1914 until 1933 and carried a total of 7.3. million passengers traveling between Portland and Lewiston. Serving the communities of Lewiston, Auburn, New Gloucester, Gray, West Cumberland, West Falmouth, and Portland. Operating over some 30 miles of well-ballasted private right-of-way and trackage rights into both Portland and Lewiston. The PLI was special, a jewel that was cherished by its employees and patrons alike.

First, we will briefly visit the early years of the electric railway service in Falmouth. The Portland & Yarmouth Electric Railway was awarded its charter on November 21, 1894. In 1895, the company obtained locations in Portland, Deering, Falmouth, Cumberland, & Yarmouth. A change in ownership occurred early in 1897, followed by controversies that led to legal action. Finally, in August of 1897, the construction of the line started. The rebuilding of Tukey's Bridge delayed the completion of the railway for a year. Service from Portland to the Cumberland/Yarmouth town line was opened on August 1, 1898. The balance of the line to the Grand Trunk Railroad depot at Yarmouth was completed on August 18, 1898.

Maine's Street & Electric Railways 1863-1946."

A half-hour schedule between Portland and Yarmouth was placed in effect, the nearly thirteen-mile route having a one-hour running time. The Portland Railroad took stock control of the Portland & Yarmouth line on December 11, 1900.

The route of the Yarmouth line; Monument Square via Elm and Oxford Streets to Washington Avenue; Washington Avenue to Veranda Street; Veranda Street to Martin's Point Bridge; Route One through Falmouth and Cumberland Foresides to Yarmouth; Pleasant and Main Streets to Grand Trunk Depot in Yarmouth. 12.44 miles. Services on the Yarmouth line, outward from the Marine Hospital, were abandoned on June 29, 1933. The same-day service ended for the Portland-Lewiston Interurban.

Falmouth had Maine's only electric fountain at Underwood Spring Park.
The Portland & Yarmouth Electric Railway opened the park in the summer
of 1899.

Built upon an underground spring that gushed forth a quarter of a million
gallons of healthy water every 24 hours. Day-trippers from Portland
could depart Monument Square every 30 minutes, every 15 minutes during
peak times. 20 cents roundtrip. Every evening between 8 and 9 p.m.,
an engineer would operate the electric fountain, manipulating its
controls to create a shifting rainbow of color in the water. The casino and
theater burned down in 1907 and were never rebuilt.  Text and images from

From the Narcissus 1912 Renovation Project Blogger - Phil Morse

I have attended each of the past five Maine Woods Forever Roundtable gatherings at Unity College in Unity, Maine. I have thoroughly enjoyed the setting of the meetings, the guest speakers,  the opportunity to meet representatives of the various organizations in attendance, and the opportunity to make new friends. As a member of two nonprofit organizations that have direct connections to Theodore Roosevelt; the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine with its historic 1912 Portland-Lewiston Interurban No. 14, Narcissus, the luxurious high-speed interurban in which, Theodore Roosevelt was a passenger between Lewiston, ME, and Portland, ME on August 18, 1914,  and also the New England Chapter of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (Oyster Bay, NY), I'm delighted with the Maine Woods Forever's annual presentation of their Theodore Roosevelt Maine Conservation Award.

The Narcissus 1912 Renovation Blog was started two years ago with the intent to share information relating to Theodore Roosevelt and his connections in Maine, his connection to the Narcissus, the restoration of the National Register of Historic Places, Narcissus, and its relationship to Maine's railway history.

Did you know that the electric railway vehicles of the Portland-Lewiston Interurban from 1914 through its end in 1933, were each outfitted with a Cell Phone? These particular cell phones were patented in 1903 by Western Electric. The phones operated using 1.5 volts, dry cell batteries :) Stop by the Seashore table, and, see one of the phones and crank it up.
