Theodore Roosevelt Timeline Parallel with STM Railway Collection Part 1 - 1858-1900

Theodore Roosevelt utilized rail transportation throughout
his life. August 31, 1916, TR was a passenger aboard

the Portland-Lewiston Interurban, No. 16, Clematis.

He would also ride a PLI  interurban, No. 14, Narcissus,

August 18, 1914.  The Narcissus is currently undergoing

restoration in Kennebunkport, Maine, at the

 Seashore Trolley Museum's Town House Restoration Shop.

Theodore Roosevelt's Timeline and Parallels with

Seashore Trolley Museum's Historic Railway Collection

      In the year of TR's birth, 1858, Philadelphia opened its first horsecar line.

Horse Railroads/Horse-drawn passenger cars (horsecars) on rails first came onto the public transportation scene in the late 1820s. They evolved from the earlier horse-drawn omnibus, which was basically a city version of the stagecoach. Manhattan had its first horsecar line in 1832. By the early 1850s, horsecar lines had been spreading throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.

     Many forms of "horseless" cars were tried over many years, but the system that ultimately won out was the electrically-fed trolley car designed by Frank Julian Sprague and first put into large-scale operation in Richmond, VA, beginning in January 1888.

     Seashore Trolley Museum's extensive collection includes railway vehicles and buildings that were built and were part of the fabric of public transportation throughout TR's life.

2019 Maine Learning Results for Social Studies and Common Core State Standards:

Theodore Roosevelt Maine Heritage Trail - Moose F - Presque Isle 1885

Mirror from Theodore Roosevelt's Elkhorn Ranch in North Dakota.

Wilmot S. Dow's grandson, John Dow, donated this

TR artifact, along with two other precious, personal TR items,

to the Presque Isle Historical Society. John Dow's father,

Wilmot E. Dow was a "Badland Baby".  Wilmot E. Dow's father,

Wilmot S. Dow and William Wingate Sewall were Maine guides

who became lifelong friends with Theodore Roosevelt.

    I first started researching Theodore Roosevelt in 2010. As a volunteer at Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine, I oversaw the Narcissus project (Roosevelt was a passenger on the Narcissus on August 18, 1914). This initial research piqued my curious nature. I wanted to learn more about Theodore Roosevelt and his various visits to Maine.

   Twelve years later, that seed of curiosity has taken root and blossomed into the development of what is the Theodore Roosevelt Maine Heritage Trail: Connecting Maine Communities. Insight throughout the State of Maine is what this trail provides by tracing and describing Theodore Roosevelt's connections with each of these communities.

Each community is identified with a star with a number or

a moose with a letter. The key to the logo landmarks is below.

Each moose represents a community that has an indirect

connection with Roosevelt, meaning he may not have paid the

community a visit, and there is a meaningful connection to Roosevelt

in that community. The stars indicate a community

that Roosevelt visited and probably engaged with the people.

And/or the local geography. As research continues, other

communities will be added to the logo.

connections will have a separate page describing

details of TR's connections. Each will also

have a link or links to local resources/venues.

Today, we describe Moose F - shown on the list (key) above - Presque Isle 1885

    Theodore Roosevelt made several visits to Maine. Yes, there were times when he was older that those visits would have been made as necessitated by his politics. However, the majority of his visits were for personal gain. I speak of personal gain in the sense of his own personal health and well-being. We know Maine is "Vacationland, The Way Life Should Be." Maine has long been known as a place to "re-create", renew oneself, and contemplate one's purpose or direction. Whether near the ebb and flow of the mesmerizing coastline or taking in its breathtaking vistas along so many beautiful rivers and mountains, this great state of Maine has drawn many a soul in seeking fresh air and perhaps inner guidance to a fresh start.

His first visit to Island Falls, Maine, was in September 1878

     TR was an undergraduate student at Harvard University in 1878 when he visited Island Falls, Maine, in Aroostook County. TR was still grieving the death of his father when he first was with Maine guides William Sewall and Sewall's nephew, Wilmot S. Dow, that late summer of 1878. TR would return in February 1879 and once more in August 1879. TR recalls these visits to Maine in a letter he wrote on March 20, 1918, titled "My Debt To Maine" by Col. Theodore Roosevelt. The opening paragraph states, "I owe a personal debt to Maine because of my association with certain staunch friends in Aroostook County; an association that helped and benefitted me throughout my life in more ways than one."

William Windgate Sewall (with an ax) and Wilmot S. Dow

Island Falls, Maine. The file is dated circa 1921. However,

Wilmot died in 1891 (35 years old). So, this image is pre-1891.

Theodore Roosevelt's Elkhorn Ranch was built from scratch

by William Sewall and his nephew Wilmot Dow in 1884/85, on

Dakota territory, in the Medora area.

Wilmot would travel back to Maine in late spring of 1885. Married his wife Lizzie, and returned to the Dakotas with his aunt Mary Sewall and his 3-year-old niece, Kittie. The Sewalls, Dows, and Theodore Roosevelt all lived in the Elkhorn Ranch house. In 1886, Mrs. Dow and Mrs. Sewall both gave birth to children who would be known as the "badland babies."

Then it's Mrs. Dow, with two neighbors next to her. They are

In the lower right, the Colt is a long-barreled, 40-caliber revolver,

used by Theodore Roosevelt. Wilmot S. Dow's

grandson, John Dow, donated this TR artifact to the

Presque Isle Historical Society.

    - had five children, including Wilmot S. Dow (he was Sewall's nephew)

Wilmot S. Dow and his wife, Lizzie
    - Wilmot E. Dow, b. 08/12/1886 (Badland Baby)
    - Married Katherine Stevens in Presque Isle
    - owned a drug store in Presque Isle
    - had three daughters and two sons, Wilmot S. Dow and John A. Dow, b. 1917

It was John Dow, who lived and worked in Presque Isle and served as Chair of the Chamber of Commerce, who left the Historical Society the three artifacts.

Dan and Rose Vallee are together once again in the Narcissus.

Married for 49 years, Dan first introduced Rose to his parents when

the elder Vallees were living in the Narcissus in Sabattus,

This photo opportunity was prepared specifically for photo opportunities inside the right side of the

smoking compartment during the three-day event to benefit the Narcissus project. The restored original passenger windows in Santo Domingo mahogany sash, with restored original leaded stained glass eyebrow

above, also in an original mahogany sash. All the mahogany components seen here encasing the windows and the bulkhead frame (on the far left unfinished), including the brass hardware, which is original to the Narcissus. Notice the framed pictures of the 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, in the White House next to a 1914 image of the Narcissus in Gray :) 

The 1912 Portland-Lewiston Interurban, Narcissus, the night

before the Teddy Roosevelt Days benefit event. Guests will be

invited to investigate the beauty that we volunteers, or staff,

have at the Seashore Trolley Museum. A privilege to

experience daily.  All 26 restored stained glass clerestory windows

 (13 on each side) were in place for the event. PWM

The right side, at the number 1 end, smoking compartment

of the Narcissus. The large leaded stained glass "eyebrow,"

on high, above the double-sash passenger windows. Also in

place for event guests viewing, for the three-day benefit

event, is the vertical sheathing on each side working

its way into the vertices of the restored exterior poplar

arch halves. PWM

Captured, capturing, a special moment. The right side of the

Narcissus' smoking compartment was prepared specifically for

guest photo opportunities during the benefit event. In the

background is the number 1 end vestibule. One can see the

original bulkhead window sash with brass hinges (left and right),

the center train door, a large window sash on either side of the

train door, and lower panels below the sash. All original mahogany!

Presque Isle Historical Society's display of the beautiful artifacts of

Theodore Roosevelt's. In the case on the left is TR's birch-bark

moose call he used while hunting in Maine in 1878 & 1879 with

Maine guides, William Sewall and Wilmot Dow. The mirror on the

wall in the back is the original buffalo horn mirror from TR's Elkhorn

Ranch in North Dakota. Sewall and Dow were hired as ranch hands

for the ranch in the mid-1880s. The Maine guides cut down trees

and built the Elkhorn Ranch, and lived in the ranch house with

their wives (and had children) and with TR. In the case on the right

is TR's single-action Colt 40-caliber long-barreled revolver used

 in the Dakotas. PWM

How cool is this shot? The reflection in Theodore Roosevelt's

Elkhorn Ranch mirror is one of the three men who used this very

mirror daily, for three years in North Dakota in the mid-1880s!

Field". I personally found the book very engaging and

enlightening, and strongly recommend it. PWM

Dan Vallee gave an extremely entertaining explanation of what

his life was like as he grew up living in the Narcissus in the 1940s,

50s, and 60s. Stories of living conditions, family members, and

life in general as told through a variety of personal stories.

Raffle prizes included a pine wood-barreled pen. The pine is

from a Narcissus clerestory, nailing roof rib. Also, an ash

wood-barreled pen was raffled off as well. PWM

After seeing so many of the stained glass windows in place

in the Narcissus over the three-day event, my sense is

that the Narcissus is going to be even more beautiful when fully
